Out of a nation rich in culture and history came a music unique to a people. That has made its impact both local and internationally. This phenomenal art form is Reggae Music. It is not known exactly where the word "Reggae" came from but the art form started in Jamaica in the 1960’s. This indigenous music grew from ska, mento and rock steady, which were the earlier musical art forms. Over the years reggae has been divided into three main categories:

  • Dub Poetry
  • Dancehall
  • Roots Rock Reggae

Mutabaruka
This is the spoken form often referred to as "Reggae Talk". It was introduced in the late 70’s by Linton Johnson. In this art form the message is more dominant than the music. Dub poets like Mutabaruka,Yasus Afari and DYCR stirs the consciences of the people with their outspokenness.
Dancehall
U Roy

This genre was started by Ewart Beckford aka. U Roy, who laid the foundation. It exhibits a high lyrical content mixed with high tempo rhythm. The artist’s style varies, reflecting different views and ideas. Yellowman, Shabba Ranks, Buju Banton, Beenie Man, Sean Paul, Shaggy and Elephant Man are just a few of the most popular artists that has taken dancehall to a higher level.

Roots Rock Reggae
Cocoa Tea

This has been the first and most prominent segment of reggae music. Popularized by The Hon. Robert Nesta Marley, Dennis Brown, Jimmy Cliff, Gregory Isaacs, Cocoa Tea and Freddie McGregor; also groups like Third World and Inner Circle. Prominent female artists include Marcia Griffiths, Rita Marley and Judy Mowatt. It explores love, roots, culture, religion and current affairs.

Bob Marley

Bob Marley is one of the most popular artists in the world and also one of the greatest songwriter, writing song for Eric Clapton, Johnny Nash and Stevie Wonder and others. He was named artist of the century and his song ‘One Love’ was awarded song of the century. Even after being dead for over 20 yrs, he continues to sell millions of records every year and is ranked 8th on the best selling dead artist chart. He was a musical messenger, teaching about love, Rastafarianism, freedom and togetherness.


Rastafarianism

This is a religion based on the teachings of The Emperor Haile Selassie. They speak out against poverty, oppression, politics and inequality. They preach justice, equality, love, togetherness repatriation and black pride. Their name for God is Jah. They do not believe that Haile Selassie is dead.
